  1. It is a video screen not unlike a TV that spews an endless stream of propaganda.

It is a virtual reminder of Big Brother.

  2. Its also believed to be a way big brother can keep watch over you in your house. Winston is careful to avoid it whenever he is breaking a thoughtcrime.

  3. The book makes very clear that the telescreen is two way. It has one channel, which pumps out propaganda and commands all day long–it cannot be turned off, and there is a limit to how low the sound can be made. But the screen also sees what you are doing–paying attention or ignoring it, following orders or doing the greatest of crimes, your own thing.
